11. TANZANITE GEMSTONE TOUR
- Museum, Mine and shops
Tanzanite is one of the rarest gemstones on earth, it is a popular blue gem that is only produced commercially in one small area of Tanzania.Rotated in different directions a single stone will exhibit three outstanding changes of colour, from reddish purple to blue to deep purple.Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, at the Mererani Hills of the Manyara Region in the north of the country. Tanzanite is mined from a single source in an area that is 2km wide and 4 km long and divided into 4 blocks (A, B, C and D) near Mount Kilimanjaro.
We will leave from arusha after breakfast to the Tanzanite mining area, where we will learn about Tanzanite mining and have the chance to actually go down the mine, underground, for about 200 – 300 m.
After leaving the mines we will drive back to Arusha and stop on the way at Duluti Crater Lake where we will enjoy a relaxing lunch by its water, out of a special varied menu at the Duluti Crater Lake Restaurant. After lunch we will proceed to Arusha for a visit at the Tanzanite Museum, where we will achieve a deeper understanding of the gemstone. Then … jewellery shopping for those who are interested, and back to the hotel.
The mining of Tanzanite.
Tanzanite is found in sausage-shaped formations, called boudins. Boudins are pegmatitic veins that have become stressed and have broken into smaller pieces. Tanzanite stones are found in small pockets inside the boudins. Not every boudin will produce tanzanite, and many that do, contain low-grade material not useful for jewellery.
Initially, tanzanite was easily collected from the surface, but scavenging mining didn’t last long and pits and tunnels quickly took preference. Geological testing has shown that tanzanite layers exist down to 200 meters below the ground. As mining levels drop deeper, increasingly sophisticated infrastructure is required to access the tanzanite. World-class infrastructure is put in place to secure the shafts, provide air supply and ventilation, watering and dewatering, to ensure the safety of the mine workers, and ensure that the tanzanite can be extracted safely and productively.
Some information.
Tanzanite was formed around 585 million years ago during the mid-Ediacaran Period by massive plate tectonic activity and intense heat in the area that would later become Mount Kilimanjaro. The mineral is located in a relatively complex geological environment. Deposits are typically found in the “hinge” of isoclinal folds.
Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite (a calcium aluminium hydroxyl sorosilicate).
In July 1967, Manuel de Souza, a Goan tailor and part-time gold prospector living in Arusha (Tanzania), found transparent fragments of blue and blue-purple gem crystals on a ridge near Mererani, some 40 km (25 mi) southeast of Arusha.
Scientifically called “blue zoisite”, the gemstone was renamed as tanzanite by Tiffany & Co., who wanted to capitalize on the rarity and single location of the gem, and thought that “blue zoisite” (which might be pronounced like “blue suicide”) would not sell well. Tiffany’s original campaign advertised that tanzanite could now be found in two places: “in Tanzania and at Tiffany’s”.

The park is a lovely scenic park known for the flamingos that inhabit the lake, during the wet season they inhabit the edges of the lake in flocks of thousands. This park is also famous for the tree-climbing lions, why these lions habitually climb trees is still up for debate, scientists speculate that they may have developed the habit to escape a nasty biting fly that devastated the Ngorongoro Crater lion populations back in the 1960s, might also be related to the humid ground around the lake area in wet season, but viewing a lion relaxing in an acacia tree is a remarkable sight. Hippos and other big mammals can also be seen throughout the year.
